Hi,
new user to Aditnow, my collegue Matt-T suggested I post a query here regarding our culvert-ringed shafts recorded during recent work at Thorpe Park Leeds.

I was wondering if anyone knew of similar examples of culverts ringing shafts that could be referenced?

I'm assuming the culvert was to intercept run-off water diverting it away from the shaft downhill (to the left on the photo). But I am no expert in mining remains.

Welcome to aditnow.

Is this the shaft at what I would call the top end of the site that has been fenced off since work began? That is the site of Ellen Pit, or is this a new find?

I can't see that surface water run off would present any significant problem at all. A shaft nearby has water to within 10ft of ground level so I assume pumping was the norm.

The old reservoir has evidence of heavy machinery mountings, but I would have thought any pumping engine would have been near the shaft.

Where does the drain empty to? Not seen this elsewhere so wonder if this was a local solution to waterlogged ground at the shaft top.

Third paragraph seems to support the culvert theory.

Only place I've come across something similar is at Llanharry Iron Mine.

Thanks for the reply rikj,

This shaft was about 150m to the north-west of Ellen Pit, and was likely earlier (although no direct dating evidence). It was one of five similar features dispersed across the area.

Oddly, (possibly due to heavy truncation) this particular one didn't seem to drain away anywhere, though other ones were connected to culverts than ran down hill.
