Hi there, newbie here. I find myself strangely fascinated by holes in the ground and the thought of these once busy places lying there quiet and abandoned. It must be in my blood as my grandfather was a Welsh coal miner and my father a geologist.

Hoping to set foot in one at some point, though being based in the south east is going to make a journey necessary. Slightly obsessed with the Great County Adit but seems like any hope of seeing that is long long past. What a shame! All the same I am contemplating a trip to Cornwall to check out the mining history, so perhaps I'll get to see some remnants soon.

First a great welcome to our website. You do not have to go a far as Cornwall. Plenty of mines on Mendip.
Cutting coal in my spare time.
