Hello all of you folk with so much more knowledge than myself.

I am Lampie and I've been playing with paraffin lamps (Tilley etc.), candles and holders for some time now. I suppose that my interest lies in non- electrical, and non- gas illumination.

However just to distract me I've been given a miners lamp and am looking for someone in Devon hopefully to be able to identify it for me and advise parts suppliers. I am after a new gauze at present. Also I presume that Colzaline, Sovent 40, Solvent 20 or Coleman fuel can be used rather than dear old paraffin.
Is there anyone out there willing to help an old codger please πŸ™‚

If it's a miners lamp it should have a name plaque on it.
Tell us the name and model number for more information.
For simplicity you can use "lighter fluid" in most lamps.
Parts appear on E-bay but depending what you need it is sometimes worth just buying a complete lamp.

Thank you
Regretfully there isn't a name plaque on it. The number 28 is indented along with what could be 238 underneath.

On the brass base under the glass is 23 59 3196 and a smaller 'font' 5594
Sorry to be so useless

However I'd rather spend time in renovating something old and considered as being useless than buying new. The old has a history.

Ok have a look at E-bay and tell us which one it looks like.

Many thanks for your help rufenig

After spending a few long minutes on the web I believe what I have is an E Thomas Williams Type no1P from Aberdare Wales.

I've emailed them with a couple of pics and await their reply. I'll let you know the result but again thank you for your welcome and offer to help

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news.
That is almost certainly a replica lamp made for the tourist market.
It will be for display only and was never fitted with gauze bonnets and seals.

Doth my short lived joy turn to sorrow?

I am not totally surprised I must admit but was hoping that it might have been someone's constant companion down the pit. Whilst there is a gauze which looks as if it has been used and is broken at the top, the wick is new and there isn't any other physical evidence that it is 'real'. I was expecting some odour from the fuel container or a gunky residue in there to no avail.

Maybe it is a little like myself at times - Looks ok but of no practical use!!

If it is a modern replica it will look like this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTHENTIC-BRASS-MINERS-OIL-LAMP-MADE-BY-E-THOMAS-AND-WILLIAMS-LTD/201524290521?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D24f156a2393a46599ae8bbd7f26de46a%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351654911999

It will probably have a "flat wick" and is to be used with paraffin only! do not use petrol of similar spirits.
There are plenty on of genuine lamps E-bay if you are interested.

Who's a lucky boy?

E. Thomas & Williams Ltd, Cambrian Lamp Works of
Aberdare have confirmed it is one of there's and is indeed a bonneted Clanny Lamp dating from about 1907’ish.

Although the gauze is burned out it is still working and burning well.

Many thanks again for your help

Well done!
There are so many replicas that we sometimes forget the genuine ET&W lamps.:-[
