I wasn't aware of this disaster so I Googled it.

I was quite surprised to find photographs of a memorial.

Two memorials, actually

One to the initial victims, and one to the rescuers who died.

I'd have thought that the monument proposed would at least have been registered as a charity so as to benefit from tax breaks. Unfortunately, the Charity Commission website doesn't come up with anything when I put in "People and Mining".

Bill has also posted messages on the Facebook page of Apedale Heritage Centre about the proposed memorial and has given instructions for completing a gift aid form. This suggests that he is collecting money on behalf of a registered charity.

I assume, is they are doing forms for Gift aid, then it is a registered charity.
All Bill has to do is post the charity's Registered Number and this will all be cleared up.

There are 2 memorials to the Oaks disaster, one is on Doncaster Road and the other is in Ardsley graveyard.
The one on Doncaster Rd is to the rescue team only. The one in Ardsley graveyard states only 354 victims.
The 150th anniversary memorial is to All 361 victims and for the first time their names will be on a memorial.
I appreciate and understand your concerns and will delete the posting until we receive our charitable status number.
Thank You
