Hi all, just checking in as a new recruit.
I have always had an interest in old mine workings, probably caused by my exposure to a good variety of them when young.

I grew up in the Teign Valley in Devon, a well-known mining area, although have since moved a few miles east. Did plenty of exploring in my youth, but a bit wiser now. I still have an unexplainable desire to get underground, but can just about make do with reading and seeing other peoples' experiences. I do have a few photos somewhere which may be worth uploading - I'll try to find them. 🙂

Hi - welcome to AN.

Your closest caving club is the Devon SS who are based in Buckfastleigh. Trouble is they don't do mines.

A better bet is the Plymouth Caving Group who are out most Tuesday nights. They run caving trips (Prid and the like) but are also fairly active in the Tamar Valley mines (and occasionally Dartmoor). If you haven't got kit they will hire (£1 a go) you a lamp and helmet. They are a nice bunch and are pretty welcoming. They have had quite an influx of new members recently so tend to be running quite a few "entry level" trips at the moment.

Brilliant. I second TM's PCG sentiment. I spent a lot of my early years getting dragged around mining sites by my father....I started going in adits and realised that ropes were next....then I joined PCG.

You never know where the journey will take you. Needless to say, my answer is "down a lot of holes"

Grow a beard... OK. I tend to sport a bit of stubble to varying degrees anyhow (much to the Good Lady's disgust) so how many millimetres of growth counts as a beard??

PGG sounds good - as Mr Blair mentioned, my explorations were also limited due to the lack of ropes, and the skills to use them safely. House move is imminent, once nicely installed in the new location I can start to get my teeth back into the underworld. 🙂
