SlimDril International are a company, based in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, that supply directional drilling services and downhole drilling tools to drilling contractors within the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) industry. This industry mainly involves the installation of pipelines under obstacles, ie. roads, rivers. railway, shorelines, etc. Drills lengths nowadays can from a few 10’s of metres be up to 3000m long.
SlimDril have been involved, over the last two years, in the development of a downhole tool (R&S Tool), which would allow drills to be longer and quicker. We have successfully completed an initial bench test in our workshop, near you at Winchcombe and after having added some further control components, we should be bench testing again beginning of July 2014.
This leads me onto why I am writing to all members. Upon completion of the next bench test we need to undergo field tests for the tool. We would like to be able to test the tool in rock that would be up to a medium strength and therefore I am looking for a suitable location, ie. a quarry, or similar. So that you have more of an understanding, the R&S tool is based near Cheltenham, the drill rig in Essex and the other drilling components, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
We propose to use a Prime Drilling HDD drilling rig and associated equipment (footprint 20m x 20m). It is proposed that we drill a hole of approximately 6.1/2” diameter x 18m long into the formation, by rotation with the drill rig. This will allow us to assemble the bottom hole assembly (BHA), which when all the components are screwed together, with one (1) joint of drill pie, would be approximately 17.5m in length. The BHA would consist of a 6.1/2” Drill Bit, 4.3/4” Mudmotor, R&S Tool, then drill pipe. The drilling fluid would be mainly water, with probably a small amount of Bentonite. It is proposed to do some non-radical directional changes with the drilling pattern. If the initial in-hole test go well, then we would like to continue to drill ahead to approximately 50m Total Depth (TD).
The proposed schedule for these drilling tests would be 1 day rig-up, 1-2 days drilling, 1 day rig-down and could be taking place anytime between 2nd week July to end of August 2014.
If you feel that you could assist us with this test, could you please contact me as soon as possible, so that we may discuss further and answer any questions you may have.
Best regards
