Hello everyone.
I've just discovered this forum and it looks like an excellent place. It's great to read all the personal recollections of places now dissappearing from our landscape. I worked in the coal industry from 1964 to 1980 starting as an apprentice elctrician at Thornley Colliery transferring to Horden when it closed in 1970. What brought me to this site was a search for references to Sherburn Hill Drift mine which I visited as an apprentice to do some salvage work after it closed. I can't find reference anywhere. It's location is under the new housing estate on the North side of Sherburn Hill , about a third of the way down, the drift was driven South towards Shadforth. Anyone know where I can find any info please? I also looked after the pumps in Ludworth Colliery and had a near miss when I got out of the wrong side of the open cage!
I have lots of fond memories working underground and lots of good marrers. I worked in many places until I retired after leaving the pit but never had better marrers. Now I'm retired I plan to spend some of my time finding out about the history of my family and most were miners.
