Guess I should do this properly. Grew up in South Manchester and used to visit Alderley Edge with my family a lot. Managed to get a book on the mine workings and have been fascinated by it all ever since. I did a lot of caving in the late 80s and early 90s, as well as mine exploration in the Peak District. Haven't done any since but always remained interested and kept an eye out for things. Joined this site years ago but never really used it. Enjoying looking through the photos and maps now. Recently got hold of an old Protector lamp and have requested some advice on the forum. Hope to take a more 'active' role now.

More of an alpine climber these days but I guess my interest has been rekindled by the fact I know live in an area riddled with mines and quarries (North East of Glasgow). Not planning to go underground but like to know where entrances and workings are.

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately very little remains of any evidence or mining remains in around Glasgow, most you'll hear about or see is stories of subsidence and that's about it. We do have a fair amount of mines around the rest of Scotland though, most just require a bit of travel to get to but they are out there.

Hi Mike, unless you know somebody in Scotland who can show you where to go I would suggest you contact the Grampian Speological group who have done a lot of work in exploring Scotland's old mines as we'll as opening up new cave systems.

I believe there's a mining museum in Lanarkshire I keep meaning to go to at some point.

I know what you mean about the mine history round here - other than the odd spoil heap, it's generally been removed/hidden. I had a quick look at the coal board site the other day and there's loads of shafts around here - was quite surprised (e.g., side of Barr Hill, not far from me).

Not sure I'm ready to go back underground again yet! I'll think about it 😉

There is at least one accessible mine not far from you, the limestone mine at Blochairn, possibly known as Blairskaith, NS590757. I have not been there for many years, but in view of where it is, I don't think that it can have been sealed or filled.

I don't know why it is not yet listed here, as it is quite well known.

It is below the road, in or adjacent to the waterfall.
