Hi Everyone,
I am a new member and having grown up in Camborne I am a mining fan, especially the ecological interest of abandoned mine sites. At present I am doing a project which is based around the Drym valley nr. Leedstown. There are two old mine sites there, Wheal Curtis and Wheal Dumpling, and I wondered if anyone had any info about these mines.
Thanks

Welcome to the nuthouse fiend, pull up a chair, pour yourself a brew and settle in...................

Have you tried the "Search" option? its up there at the top of the screen

What sort of info are you looking for?
Several of us have access to old mining maps, Dines and Hamilton Jenkins books/maps. When you say ecology are you looking to find out what was mined (other than tin and copper?)..just asking so we can focus on the info you need

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Hi
Thanks for the welcome, If possible it was just a bit of historical background I needed, such as when opened/closed, what was mined or any other titbits of mining history from that area which I believe is in the parish of Crowan. I have tried the search engine but nothing posted, although I discovered there is also a Wheal Strawberry there.
When I say ecology, my main interest has been in the flora and fauna that are associated with our mining landscapes, so I am a bit of a novice on the technicalities of mining i'm afraid.

County record office and the MK1 eyeball are your best bet then!

Wheal Dumpling was part of Crowan Consols and in 1864 was 39 fathoms below adit. there was a 48" pumping engine, and employed 37 people. Between 1863/66, sold 1,000 tons of copper ore.

Wheal Curtis was also known as Wheal Drym. It was started in 1836 by a Captain Teague who spent £15,000 on the mine selling only £5,000 worth of copper ore before he died.
After his death in 1841 another £5,000 worth of ore was sold.

In 1843 the depth was 40 fathoms below adit. There was at this time a 45" pumping engine and waterwheel at work. In 1864 the depth had increased to 50 fathoms below adit (20).

By this time the pumping engine had been increased to a 70"
and there was also a 26" winding engine. Ninety people were employed.

Wheal Strawberry also known as Wheal Julia is close to Binner Downs Mine and between 1830/37 sold 9,716 tons of copper ore worth £40,118

Hopefully you're going to hang about a bit and contribute to the forum and not just ****** off once you have got your information.

For the record. This is not an official line.

Some people contribute long term. Some people drop by to ask a question.

It takes all sorts and it's all welcome.

Indeed, a little harsh don't you think. Nice way to make new people feel unwelcome.

I am sorry if I have offended some people, this was obviously not my intention. If I may explain, the info I required was needed as part of an education project I am writing. I am hoping that by engaging people with their local history and foster an interest in the wildlife that has occurred as a direct result of our mining industry, more people will appreciate this fascinating subject. Once again thank you for the help, and hopefully I may be able to make some further contributions myself.

Don't worry, you didn't.

The reaction in question was entirely uncalled for.

If you do come up with anything interesting though, people would obviously be interested to read a few lines about it. :flowers:
