Hi, I'm a new member located in Tavistock, Devon. I have a question for the forum - is anyone familiar with the old granite quarry at Heckwood in the Walkham Valley (aka Vixen Tor Quarry)? It has an exploratory 200m lateral shaft as well as open quarry workings. Any idea which local bodies I could get information about this site from?

Maybe try Plymouth Caving Group (PCG), they have an internet site, look for soeone called Dave Warne on it, his nuber should be there. Try him, he's a decent bloke and will help if he can.
Love it . . . 🙂

As a complete novice at this I assume I should try the local public records office (ie Devon County or West Devon Borough Councils?) for more historic info?

We (PCG) had a look at these & surveyed the workings some years ago, & have a bit of historical info (in part I think which came from Justin Brooke). Got some way towards an account of everything in the area which may appear one day...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
