Been on here before looking at some of the excellent photo sets of places. Thought someone on here may recognise this location.

It's my Dad on one of his jaunts on his Velocette from Nottingham probably in the 60s. But WHERE is it? I'd like to go there but having trouble finding it.



It looks to be a mine or quarry (or maybe both) in the background, is it somewhere you know?

I would say it is most likely to be Peak District or Yorkshire ish as he doesn't have any luggage.

If anyone has any suggestions, i can check them out on Streetview.

Indeed it does, i think you may have got it in one droid. After seeing your reply we modded our route through the Peaks today and stopped in a layby (road straightening left over by the looks of it) just south of Buxton on the A6....and i'm pretty certain that the view of Rocksdale is it...albeit with the buildings being demolished and some more recent works on the top and a new plantation.

Thanks very muchly, will compare the pictures i have to try to prove beyond doubt. May also try to dig for old pictures of area too. But it's certainly a good start, thanks again!

Hmmm not so sure, I think it could be Millers Dale Lime works seen from the other side of the valley.... This was to the East of the Millers dale Viaducts on the South side of the tracks.

Edit... A map for you... and I just realised I think I have a pic taken from same spot on that corner recently. Its a classic spot for capturing the valley if it is Millers Dale.

It looks like the old concrete buildings at Priestcliffe quarry near to Millers Dale Station. As they used to be before demolition.

Its Millers Dale Limeworks for certain, I just got the angle view wrong, the pic is taken off the station approach road looking over to the work, that what threw me was the wall is going up hill when the road goes down, he's not on the road he is on the station approach road above it which goes up hill. Fab pic for a whole number of lovely reasons! :thumbsup:

Great work, thanks for taking the time markup the map and find the pics. i was just on Streetview and noticed that feature on the hill also...brilliant! I owe a couple of pints here!

I was thinking he was further up the road, further up the hill about a third of the way along that straightish section? But you mention the station approach rd, will need to look at the old map again and go and have a nosey!

I tried to find this bike but there seems to be no trace. I did end up with his brothers Velocette MAC, but i need to do a bit of work on the carb to get it running again. They used to take them out for a spin into the Peak District. May have to take the MAC up to Millers dale and recreate the scene...now i know where! :thumbup:

I reckon the shot is taken looking over the roof of the tin shed cafe (out of sight below wall).... Quarry Closed 1930,

The buildings were still there in 1968 when Terry and I camped in them whilst walking along the not yet salvaged railway.
I think they went in the 70's but not certain.

Is the Tin Shed Cafe gone? Sorry i don't know this part of the Peak District but i think that will change!

Found this on Disused Stations. A picture from the Signal Box west of the station in the winter of '63 so around the right era. The kiln buildings as per my pic (with the bit that goes up the hill on pillars) are visible on the valley side on the right. As is the white cottage by the rail bridge over the road (which looks to still be there from Streetview).



Thanks for the info on dates Stafford, i was wondering if i could date the image from that but it's good to get an idea of roughly when they were demolished.

EDIT: I found the wriggly tin and the wall you think it might be as the station approach is still extant...i'll have to head out after work one night whilst we have the light nights.

Been tonight and I am wrong re station approach, angle ok height wrong... he must have been higher up hill. Tinplate building still there and I had a look at the Limeworks, some good remains but a def winter explore! 🙂

I'd say it was higher up the hill too, after the road has turned round the hairpin and headed towards Wormhill.

I knew there were some sizeable buildings on the site, but I didn't realise how big. I'd be interested to see other photos of them if anyone comes across them, as a few remaining fragments show that they were built in the same BLF style as the Cowdale quarry ones.

Roy they are totally wrecked and no style detectable... I will post pics later. I originally thought higher up but I cant seem to get the distances and background relationship right up there ... hence I thought lower down, now def NOT right! Fun puzzle tho.... :surrender: :lol:

Well i came to the conclusion after trying to line up that little bump feature that todays visible remains are the bits partially obscured by my Dad....and that the apex roof bit and towers are to the left of that and now just trees...so i was going to try getting an exact ish spot from aligning with the LHS of the current remains and what looks to match up with that on the old pic...and then get the rough x distance between that and the "feature" about right...but agreed, part way along the upper road beyond the bend somewhere near where my streetview link in the posts up there /\. Interested to see how your results compare! I'll have a proper go using that theory tomorrow.

YUP but covered in trees!!! Sorry could not pin it down as was in a rush home but as it was close thought I would call in!
