C ould someone tell me the histroy and also what seams were worked and any other information

Perhaps worth visiting the restored engine house, the volunteers involved are usually around on saturday mornings & should think they would have the info you require. 🙂

sunk in 1871/72 seams up to 1940s Top Hard seam. 1940s to 1960s High Main seam. 1960s High Main, Main Bright, and High Hazles. Ceased production July 1967. Temporarily operated as a part of Linby pit.

Carnkie, thanks for putting up that link. I always like stuff like that.

But I was puzzled by one thing. The men were searched for matches at pit bottom. Surely that was usually done before entering the shaft area, at the top? It just seems a bit strange that this one pit was different. Maybe there was an interesting reason for this?

Easy peasy, have a look at Fionn Taylors website on mines rescue and a bit more, google healey hero. That should point you in the right direction. On the front page click on Bob Bradley. That will take you to Bob's history of East Midland coal mining, blinky flip there is a lot to get through. If you start at the year Bestwood opened and carry on to the year Bestwood closed. Best viewed with a plate of sandwichs and a flask of coffee, it will take that long. Apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I only started being a pensioner in February
