Joined the forum with a view to learning a bit about mining especially early mining. I have so far just visited part of The Bog Mining area... also interested in the views, nature and hill walking. (67 fit ish.. with wife)

Consider joining the Welsh Mines Society - they have a strong mid and north west Wales focus and regularly run surface walks around mine sites. They have a website with all the back issues of their newsletter online. There is a strong contingent with a specific interest in early mining. Membership at about £5.00 a year is excellent value.

Which Bog Mine are you referring to - the one at Ponterwyd in Ceredigion?

Thanks for the replies. I stumbled upon The Bog mines of South Shropshire, and the picturesque Stiperstones area, by accident really, a few weeks ago. I have been reading a bit about these mines and I thought it would be a good place to start. Snailbeach seems very intresting and being quite near (12 miles) I thought to start in this area. Later on trying to learn about my fellow countrymen and visiting Ponterwyd and others as I go. I have never been in a Mine of any sort but I expect that this season my be drawing to a close and I may have to wait untill next Spring for this. thanks.

No closed season on mines exploring unless bats or flooding or lambing get in the way really - its all in the dark anyway

You could think of joining the Shropshire Caving and Mining Club - the public don't have access after October but its open for explorers and we have regular trips and training at Snailbeach. We are taking the public into Clive tonight and next week

Let me have your contact details and our secretary can bring you up to speed. We have had quite a few novices join over the last 12 months so you won't be alone

After re reading your interests Shropshire Mines Trust manages Snailbeach and offer a short walk into Day level every sunday alternatively there is a longer trip wellies needed and we are taking bookings for 31st October
Mike

Feel free to ask any questions on here.

I have been up to Snailbeach and had a very quick look around, due to the weather. Very interesting especially the buildings. Some of the ongoing restoration is so good to see. I look forward to a chat with menbers who understand what did what or what went where. Already had a nice piece of cake and a cuppa at the visitor center. I am a keen Shrews Town supporter and will be there today (sat 18th) so footy takes up a bit of my time also.

I thoroughly enjoyed the organised walk into Snail Beach mine end of October.. my first visit to any mine. Mike was our group leader and he gave us a very informative tour ..which was enjoyed by all, including some children. Questions were asked and answered even the children's ones about ghosts. I was supprised by how dangerous a job it was. Well organised many thanks. hans.
