On our last trip to B.y.P. we noticed that the second pitch rigging was getting pretty worn. I have a new length of rope and new maillons to be installed but haven't been able to get back there, so if anyone is going and wants to re-rig it please give me a PM and I will give you the kit. Thanks

Last month a few of us spent a bit of time tidying in ByP. The top pitch and second pitch had all the rusty maillons removed and in place of some of the rapidly corroding petzl hangers we put in some nice new resin bolts. We also left 8mm stainless chain in place on the y-hangs to make for a more permanent pull through solution. In all I think we placed 6 resin bolts and 3m of chain.
The rope on the pitches was left in situ as it was not mine to remove. Please check the bolts carefully if you visit, I've not had a day to go back and check things since the installation.
Some of the maillons on the chain are normal steel so we have plans to replace them for stainless as soon as we can otherwise the same mixed-metal corrosion will kick in again. Any donated stainless hardware would be appreciated. I think each chain to bolt connection will need swapping, so 4 in total.

Also, the rope on the Deep Adit stope traverse is knackered. Take care to inspect it before use.

Good work Pete, this will be greatly appreciated.

I've a mind to put some stainless chain on a pitch somewhere else. Is there a specific grade or type I should buy?

I used stainless steel chain made to DIN 763 specifications. This is a Euro standard for strength of chain and is realistically the only way to ensure the stuff you buy is fit for purpose without just buying huge diameter chain to be safe.
I have used some 6mm chain before and on paper it looks strong enough but in the hand looks quite small. I went for 8mm despite the jump in cost as I was putting it in a publicly accessible site and wanted to be really sure it was bomber.

If you Google DIN 763 you should find a chart of strengths and dimensions. S3i is a website I tend to order it from.

Just match any SS chain to SS maillons and bolts/hanger plates to avoid the mixed metal corrosion. Sadly stainless is over twice to price of normal steel for PPE but worth it, so long as no one nicks it.
