Hiya, I am researching my family tree and would like some information from anyone in the know.
My uncle was killed in the Bargoed mine on 31/12/1926 just after the general strike. He came from the Notts coalfield to help open the mine. Could any one point me in the direction of where he would have been buried,which cemetery.
His name was Norman Stanley Stallard
born in Hereford 25/2/1904.

The only large mine I know that was sunk in 1926 was Taff Merthyr not far from Bedlinog.

After 1914 the Annual Reports of HM Inspectors of Mines ceased listing names of those killed in fatal accidents. For this period the sources are (1) Coroner's Records - if they survive they'll be in the County Record Office; they will not state the place of burial; and (2) local newspapers - there may be up to three reports in a typical local weekly newspeper: a report of the accident, a week later a report of the sitting of the Coroner's jury and its verdict, and later, a report of the funeral. However if your uncle had only recently arrived in the area and did not have family locally, then the funeral may well have gone unreported. To determine which newspaper titles were publishe din that area at that time, look up the Newsplan Cymru website (part of the National Library of Wales website) - it lists every known Welsh newspaper and where to find surviving runs of originals and microfilms of them. You could also try contacting the county and local family history societies for advice on which cemetaries were in use at that time - in south Wales each denomination sometimes had its own burial ground or sometimes the nonconformists shared one; Anglicans usually had their own seperate burial ground. Quite often there were civic (local authority owned) burial grounds. If your uncle was a newcomer of short residence in the area, his family back where he came from might not have spent money on a permanent headstone and any wooden marker will have long since rotted away. Each burial ground should have registers from that period - again, check with county and local family history societies.

Could the accident have been in the Deri area rather than Bargoed proper? My Great Grandfather was killed in an accident in the mid 1920's in one of the mines there and my Grandmother always talked about 'Bargoed' rather than Deri.

For info, it was a Powell Duyffryn pit (from my research possibly/probably Ogilvie). The tale was that 'Billy' Rees was in a position to refuse my GG request that some props be repaired. The next day several men, including my GG and my Grandfather, were involved in a collapse at that location. My GG and Grandfather survived but my GG later died of his injuries in hospital.

Later my Grandfather, Vivian Todd, married Ethel Goff, the Mine Engineers daughter and a cousin of Billy Rees - who became my mothers hated Uncle Billy. 'Billy' Rees is possibly the W. Rees who was Mine Engineer of the nearby Darren pit in the 1930's.

Powell Duyffryn refused to pay the usual compensation for some reason - possibly because my GG died outside the mine.

In any case - that's an example of an accident from the same era and area.

In reply to Gitch, my G-Grandfather, William John Morgan also died in Bargoed House Coal Colliery. He died on 2/11/1925 and is buried in a cemetery near Bargoed, named Gwaelodybrithdir Cemetery. This is a cemetery maintained by the Local Authority (Caerphilly County Borough Council). They have complete records of burials kept on site. Hope this helps.

Gitch - it's not as easy as where your relative worked, it depends on where he lived. For example, if he lived in Bargoed, Gilfach, or Deri he probably would have been buried in Brithdir cemetery. If he lived on the Mon. side of the Rhymney river, he would have been buried in Bedwellty. If he lived in the Gelligaer area, he may have been buried there. Your best bet is to contact Caerphilly council's Office in Pontllanfraith, as they are responsible for all the cemeteries in the area. My father and virtually all of my uncles worked there at some time in their lives. My uncle Ossie died there in 1936. My father made it until 63, then he died from "dust" -pneumonoconiosis.
