Jim, most intrigued to learn that you were in Coldberry North level in the late 60's. In my recollection it was blocked by a major fall at the portal just inbye of the steel arches from at least the early 80's onward, and probably much earlier.

I would be most interested to see any other pics you may have of this mine in particular and Hudeshope in general, as I have spent many years exploring in the valley and know many of the mines very well, and am happy to share any information I have which may help further understanding of the area.

Hi legendrider,

I'm working my way through all the photos my Dad annotated and there are some others of bits around Hudeshope, especially if you includes Skears. I'll be uploading stuff as time allows and mad collie gives me some peace, any info you can add would be much appreciated.

The main reason we think it was the late 60's is that Richard and I had bought ourselves wetsuits by 68/69 as we were less than keen on freezing in places like Mongo Gill and we don't seem to be wearing such delights in the pic and my hair was longer in the early 1970's - such are our forensic dating skills.

The photos you uploaded have a whiff of Skears about them, maybe they were taken way inbye beyond the LH junction to Hardberry Hill? If you need any help with location ID I'll certainly be pleased to assist ;D

Just checked my scribbles on my Dad's photo notes and there seems to one more in Coldberry (as yet undigitised), as he's clear that the level was no longer accessible then I'll have to assume he was referring to the right level. Who knows maybe someone else has some pics lurking in a box. In total there seem to be about 30 photos from the Hudeshope Beck/Skears area.

Having said that, with a few exceptions, one level can look much like another, it rather goes back to rufenig's point in January about making contemperaneous notes, although that's no definite help when you dealing with stuff which is 40/50 years in the past.

It's good to get whatever info is available so that attributions are as accurate as can be.

I've got several of John's slides of flowstone in Low Skears and Firestone Level to upload but as with several other slides they are suffering from a bit of colour fading. Nice, kind, internet tells me Photoshop has a very good colour wheel option so I'll use with that in due course and try and improve them. I've also come across one more of the Allenheads waterwheels, very similar in position to the one Yorshireman had a good go at but with a bit more original colour in it, so I'll have a good play with that and see if it's worth uploading. We've also found the remaining pile of John's annotated slides so that's another 100ish to work through as well as some photos with dates and locations on, so I will be able to correct some dates on those I've already uploaded viz. Brewery Shaft and Whitesike.
