Hi I'm a newbie in North Wales and have recently joined the site. I'm just getting kitted up and I'm looking for a decent lamp as I only have a mountaineering headtorch at present. The thread title says it all really. Does anyone have any experience of this lamp?

It seems reasonable for the money and would maybe make a good backup when I can afford something more fancy in the future. But what do other people think. Is it as good as the write up and the linked review say or is it cheap, tacky and not very durable?

Not a bad bit of kit, a fair few people seem to use them.

http://www.caplamps.co.uk/cordless-led-caplamps-mining/ - which also has the advantage of having a tilting bracket.

I've seen one in use, my impression was that it was a bit lacking in brightness, perfectly sufficient for finding your way about though and for £60 quid or so new it's pretty good value.

It looked tough enough but didn't get much rough treatment on the trip we were on.

Pretty much what I'd heard people say about them. Not the brightest by a long way but - lux value suggests about 100lm (?) so I guess on a par with most 1W Chinese mining lamps.

Welcome to the site btw chrisj. You'll find a fair few people on here from N Wales.

You'll also find yourself spoilt for choice with all the lamp options out there - you can spend anything from about £20 to £400 on one 😞

I'd perhaps suggest getting underground with a few people and see what you think of their lamps. Some lamps give really tight pencil beams - great for seeing something 200 yards away, not great for seeing what's under your feet. Some lamps are all spill and no beam - ideally you want something that gives you a bit of both.

Alex, you are not the right person to be describing a lamp's power as you run around with your mega bright monster - anything else just pales into insignificance! :tongue:

Indeed, in the meantime I have come up with my own custom lamp. Not sure how many lumens it puts out but it's around 3 candlepower.

Quite remember it, the funny thing was, we had absolutely no problem getting about in whatever size of mine we explored back in those days.

But why settle for less when you don't *need* to.

My main headlamp for walking around is a 300 Lumen £5 from china cheapie. Works well enough, fairly sturdy, although I wouldn't attempt a crawl unless I had to. Why on earth would I want a heavire, dimmer, bulkier lamp instead? I have Oldhams, but I don't use em.

I appreciate the nostalgia, and that you don't need to see that far to get around, but you can see the entire length of the chamber, in good detail these days, and it doesn't cost the earth.

Looks nice, 90 lumens, and then I looked at the price: £135. Oh dear... for quite a bit less than that you can have a Spark ST6-500CW (about £80) - surely a more desirable bit of kit, although of course each to their own.

Alex,

Have you not told the forum of the fundamental flaws with your candlebra?

Within 1 minute of entering Bedlams you were complaining of hot wax burns. :lol: I spent a good portion of the return leg relighting your candles which you would stub out on the roof. And by the end of your trip you looked like an extra from a Bukkake movie with all the wax over you. :lol:
