I've just realised I need a lamp for the lamplight trip.

Stacks on eBay, but would rather avoid anything new and shiny.

Any suggestions :flowers: :flowers:

You should be able to pick up an old carbide lamp cheaply enough. Even if its not specifically a miner's lamp the output should be more or less the same.

Ta Wormster - that looks the ticket, I guess the local hardware store might have them as well. I'll have a check tomorrow.

Rufenig - thanks for the ebay recommendations. That first lamp looks really nice, but it's looking like it might go for a bit more than I might be happy risking dropping...

No worries Si, you might pay a bit more at the local hardware store, I've got several hanging up outside! getting a nice patina on them as we speak.

Thanks for this link rufenig. What's the going rate for a lamp in working order either like the one in this auction or similar?

Might fetch quite a bit, it's the relativly rare Garforth version of the Wolf. Not to be confused with the almost identical Wolf FS utility lamp with was used in thousands by the Post Office, BT ect. These are worth a tenner or so - be interested to see what the FG makes.

It went for £46, and I forgot to put a bid in 😠

Shall have to do this trip with something entirely unauthentic!

Just for reference, for a Protector Type 6, you'd pay anything between £10-60, depending on luck and condition. Usually nearer the top end. Absolute quality bit of kit though.

Worth knowing what to look out for, as it would be very easy to pay good money for something missing a vital bit.

But, they are primarily flame safety lamps used for gas detection, not illumination. When the flame is at the correct height for gas detection it's quite a bit lower than a household candle. In other words, very dim.

Thanks for that Wormster, just got a £2.99 lamp delivered today. It does work well and one could never manufacture anything similar for less money even out of salvaged material.
It reminds me of the parafin lamp our father would leave hanging in the toilet (ty bach)at the top of our garden in the 1960's in freezing weather. It was there to stop the water freezing not for us to see if we were aiming correctly at the pan.
I remember the saying when toilets were starting to be moved indoors -
People are now eating out and shi#### indoors.

I could fancy giving the old Premier an airing without inviting ttxela's disapproval.. but not enough to drive to N Wales in Jan ............
''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change .... oh, I don't know, I've still got a lamp like that.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
