Well done, Simon. How interesting!
I've never actually met these things! What's in them? Is there any form of COSHH/CHIP documentation that comes with them?

Can't find any COSHH style info, but this page on a USA supplier's site does at least identify the chemicals (in theirs at least!)

How interesting!
A 0.5% solution of hydrogen peroxide in phthalate ester!
Phthalates are endocrine disrupting compounds.
I wouldn't eat that frog if I were you Simon!

Following an experiment last night:

🔗Personal-Album-2-Image-087[linkphoto]Personal-Album-2-Image-087[/linkphoto][/link]

Left - snapped 10 hours earlier and put in the freezer
Middle - put in the freezer for 10 hours, not snapped
Right - snapped 10 hours earlier and not frozen

In line with what one might expect for a chemical reaction, the glowing is retarded by the low temperature but as soon as the temperature rises, the glow returns.

I've put the stick back in the freezer and will try it again in a few days...

Great review! But what distance will they light? Could you navigate a mine tunnel with these if you were desperate?

And here we are, about four weeks later! I have removed said glowstick from the freezer and warmed it up - here's a pic:

It's alive and well!

Which one did you put back in the freezer, left, middle or right?
Conversely, what happens if they are warmed up? eg. a short, low power, time in a microwave? Ambient, +10c, +20c?

I've used these in the past, never underground though.

When I was at a Science lecture in Manchester last year, we were told that for emergencies the colours yellow and green were best.

Er, left was put back in the freezer and was the one I popped out four weeks later.

Basically, if you freeze the thing, the reaction that produces the light is massively slowed down and you can 'stop' it and then reactivate it by warming it up.

I'd imagine that because the human eye can see greeney light better than colours the other end of the spectrum. although blue light always seem to be crap for some reason.

Following on from the review of the cheap glow sticks, had a play last weekend with some of the 30 minute super bright ones http://www.glosticks.co.uk/white-high-intensity-minute-glow-sticks-p-80.html  definitely a different league in light output, but at the cost of an exponentially reduced lifespan.

These are the ones I use now, as you say very bright, but best to carry at least two. They are also physically a lot tougher than the real elcheapo ones, so don't get so easily damaged in your tackle bag. Good bit of kit!
The management thanks you for your co operation.

I agree, I'll upload a photo later or tomorrow I took just by the light of one of them. Very impressed with them and certainly enough light to escape a mine by.
