Its come to my attention on another group that the offices at Groverake have mysteriously burned down over the weekend.

I'm sure ebgb may contribute some ideas on certain co-incidences with the timing.

Not my photo, taken by Martyn Langley.

there are pressures being brought by Durham County Council to have the whole site cleared and levelled, but the landowner, mine owner and rights owners are all happy for it to remain as is.

then it catches fire... go figure

there's other potential interests up there as well currently, so could go a different direction altogether

Was inevitable really, Cambokeels offices and fitters workshop were also fired in the last year or so.

Likely to be the scrap wombles for the last of the cabling and pipework.

must have this wrong then, because i was sent a link of documents from DCC stating that they are trying to save this mine, the collapsed winder house was until recently listed, the owner /farmer when challenged about its safety responded by saying he was going to pull it down, the DCC advised him against it as it was subject along with other parts of the mine to a preservation order I have been informed its the land owner who9 wants it to go,to return the site to green pasture:confused:

I see some close-ups have been added to the site.

Its a crying shame Groverake is one of my favourite sites to photograph I always find something different each time I go.

Does sound a bit suspect though with rumours that the council want it flattened and then it catches fire making an unsafe building giving the council more power to force an order of demolition on it.

Judging by these photos from the Friends of Groverake Facebook page, demolition has begun.

Glad I went for a last look a couple of months ago during VM120

It is only the buildings that were falling down already that are being demolished. We are still waiting for feedback from the estate regarding the proposal for the headframe

I've heard locally that the powers that be are less than impressed though that folks were wandering around taking pics as demolition was taking place.

Totally underlines their point regarding public liability.

I'm not a member of the 'Friends Of Grove Rake Mine' i'm merely copying what was added to their Facebook group as no-one from the group seems to be posting here.

Quote:

LATEST NEWS - We’re told that the structure will be demolished within days despite our having submitted a business plan for its preservation.

The reason why this is happening, we’re told by the agent, is to satisfy a requirement of the Coal Authority for unobstructed access to the shaft under the head frame.

However, we have approached the Coal Authority directly and obtained (15 November) a joint statement from them and the Environment Agency that makes plain that:

"we are at such an early stage in the feasibility study that we would not want this technical perspective to override any archaeological or cultural considerations relating to the fate of the heritage at Grove Rake Mine. There may be other technically feasible ways of obtaining access to the mine water that will allow us to investigate if pumping from the shaft is a viable way to capture and treat the mine water and clean up the longstanding pollution of Rookhope Burn."

We’re now asking for a stay of execution and an urgent meeting with the landowner’s agent to discuss the implications of the new statement.

BREAKING NEWS: BBC Look North will be at Groverake tomorrow (Thursday, 11am). If you want to help save the headgear, please turn up to show your support! Let's have a big crowd up there to show how important this monument is to the Dale. We even have John Grundy coming to say a few words to help our campaign
