I live in Ysbyty Ystwyth and I've been fascinated by the local mines for a long time now. Has anybody been into these? Are there maps of the inner workings of these mines?

Just earlier today I went to Logaulas and dropped a stone down one of the shafts. Took a while to go 'clunk'. So intriguing!

I believe these are accessible by Level Fawr. Are they accessible from anywhere else? I think there are supposed to be adits at Glogfach, but couldn't find them.

I'd love to take my GoPro 8 and camera down there, and really document what's in there, but I've literally no experience, so it's just a daydream as it stands.

Hi there and welcome to aditnow.

Your last sentence says it, "no experience". Recommend that you join a club to gain this. Recommend Shropshire Caving and Mining Club, but hold back with any activities until the current public health crisis is passed.

The mines that you mention have been accessed, but by vertical rope techniques which require a high skill level. Lefel Fawr does go for some distance and undercuts the mines, but little of the workings are actually accessible.

There should be some material on here inc photos etc. It was on the meets list for the 2019 NAMHO conference, more on this site.

I would urge you strongly to keep out of the mines unless you are prepared to spend money on personal safety gear, helmet with chin strap with fixed electric light as bare minimum, and then only explore in the company of others who have previous experience.

Thank you for your welcome and thorough response, Roy. Let's just make one thing clear, I have a healthy fascination and intrigue with these mines because they're local to me. Frongoch is also another interesting one that I often pass on the way to town.

I have no plan on entering them as I don't have the gear or training. I'd only even consider it if I had the opportunity to do it with someone who's experienced.

Although, learning about this kind of stuff does sound like an interesting hobby I could take up sometime. One of my friends is an experienced member of a Mine/Caving Club down Swansea way.

Is it true that these are a 900ft abseil to get to the levels?

Also, have you explored Esgair Mwyn also?

I have descended Pen y bwlch shaft when it was open for about 200 -250 feet to a blind level off withe top of a rising main. The Glogs, via the back level, for about 180 feet. A friend made a further descent of about another 60 feet to recover a dropped tackle bag. The 900 feet is a myth, although if all routes where clear, which they are not, who knows.

I highly recommend getting Ioan Lords "Rich Mountains of Lead", also you may want to contact him.

When the current emergency has passed you may get opportunity to go underground.
