I was reading a book about the ill fated liner 'Titanic' when a name leapt out at me. Its captains full name was Edward John Smith.
Looking at my archive material, there he is, describing himself as "Master Mariner" amongst the list of shareholders of the Talybont Silver Lead Mining Company 1885, the company responsible for the only complete plan which we have of the mine.

Intriguing coincidence Roy!

http://captainedwardjohnsmith.co.uk/1311.html  just in case there might have been more than one qualified master of this name alive at this date.

Robert, you are a gem!
You got me doing some research and look what I find.

He married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in 1887 a year after the entry. So Roy look again at the shareholder register, and guess what he find.

The whole family of Penningtons with the address "Woodhead" at Newton Le Willows Mersyside are listed as shareholders.
Capt Smiths famous marritial home was "Woodhead" so they must have named their home after his new wifes parents home.

This is from a website:
"In January 1887 at Winwick parish Church near Warrington, Edward John Smith married a farmer’s daughter, Sarah Eleanor Pennington. They initially set up home nearby in Tuebrook, ( 45 Osborne Road on the share register)"

A John Pennington (Farmer) is also listed on the share register, so his father in law also had shares.

Unfortunately, the mining company went down before the ship.
