Attempting to recover mine photos from dead Acer Aspire 5532. Cause of laptop death unknown but if HDD is good (??????) This might help. Or, this might makes things worse. Pay for a professional is a better option, various disclaims and no liability accepted

How to open the laptop to retrieve the old hard drive from it

Leave it in the metal caddy
Wrap (like a sandwich) in aluminium foil when storing it in a drawer if you don't have those special silver anti static bags

https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/ssd-upgrades/acer/aspire-notebook/5532  the HDD in an Acer Aspire 5532 is 2.5" SATA

Therefore it is very likely this will be what's needed
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-To-SATA-22-Pin-2-5-Inch-Hard-Disk-Drive-SSD-Adapter-Connector-Cable-Lead/333729776788

Again various disclaimers... not least if which -- it's possible the laptop died because the HDD died, which means recovery of data cannot be guaranteed if the HDD is already dead

Thanks for the input, I did remove the hard drive earlier today, and I didn’t take it from the metal sleeve thingy.
I didn’t know about storing it, I’ll nick some of Mrs. sprayer’s kitchen foil.

Any ball park figure as for what a pro would charge a church mouse like myself?

Dunno, last time I knew someone who had the same problem I was the muggings that did it, in my case I got a bottle of wine (but I'm a beer or whisky drinker 😞 ) not sure of going rate £40 maybe.

Or £3.59 if you are brave and follow that eBay link

Computer place here in Bangor has charged me £50 for the last two times it has happened to us. Recovered all the data. Photos, files, settings, everything. Once on a PC and once on a laptop. Can be done by post.

You might take a chance on £3.59 considering the drive is already out of the laptop. Plug the doohdah into the drive and both usb into the new laptop and look for a new drive. Then go into the new drive (like 😨 or E: or something that is *not* C: and on it browse to the Users folder. You might need to add your access at that point (if so it'll prompt you to do it) which might take a long time to do (up to an hour in my experience) but you can.leave it and come back to it. If it all looks too tricky unplug it and get professional help. Just think it's worth trying £3.49 or so (disclaimers apply here)

If you are able to extract the hard drive unit, there a lots of caddys that can have a unit put into, that have USB cables to put into any old pc with USB ports. Quite cheap from Amazon

if eight out of ten cats all prefer Whiskas
Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?
