Cost of a first-class stamp to rise by 9p to 85p from 1st January

At the moment I send most orders for books weighing under 1 kilo first class . With this hike I will revert to second class postage which is rising but a fairly modest amount

I send a lot of stuff 2nd class and at times the service can be absolutely gash, taking up to a fortnight depending on via which sorting office its routed.

I'm no economist but with interest rates almost zero, wages pretty much static and more folks at home ordering and sending stuff through the post so presumably more business, why does the price need to rise 10%

according to the the Royal Mail due to covid they have had to employ a lot more agency staff to cover for sickness and isolating . Their costs have increased due to PPE costs and social distancing, they are aloo tied to national deliveries whether its the remotest part of Scotland or the centre of a city. At the end of the day its now a private company and has shareholder dividends to protect!!

I would rather send stuff first class, however, with a lot of peoples incomes being affected I didn't think it fair to pass on the increase and part of my post is too se what peoples thoughts are .

I wouldn’t mind paying the bit more personally and still have it first class .

I saw Jack Dee a few years ago and he did a really funny bit about Royal Mail putting up the cost of the First Class stamp.
Along the lines of:

"It's the last bargain on earth. Deliver a letter to John O'Groats for 80p??! Too expensive??! OK well YOU bloody take it yourself then! Lets see how far YOU get with your 80p bus fare!"
