In this one, we are first of all, exploring what was believed to be an ancient drain system. It turned out to be much more once a lot of squeezing had taken place. In the second half, we explore a little known rift case, which are squeezy by their nature. Not places for people who suffer claustrophobia. Due to the nature of these locations, no location information will be given.

Your explore of the old tight adit was interesting.
Did you note any interesting artefacts in the shaft, pump rods or whatever. I saw the rising main, so presumably it was an engine shaft and your entry the drainage adit.

I would say that the adit was driven as a crosscut, and the sharp turn where it met the lode. The arching was probably to form the drainage adit with either loose ground or maybe even a stope above. So if you could have got up the shaft somehow, you may have got into workings. The shaft being sunk on the lode which appears vertical or near vertical.

Any sign that anyone else had been in?

It reminded me of one I did down Cornwall. I could actually drive my car down to it, and a crowd gathered while I was getting changed and watched me go in.
I think they were taking bets about whether i would come out again!

By the way, timber that below water is usually sound. Also in time it gets pickled with the dissolved mine salts in the water, then it never rot. In an LED light when sawn it looks blue!

Nice little discovery that adit and shaft.

I heartily concur with my old friend Roy, that this group have indeed carried mot some very useful exploration work, I am not sure that that the HSE Would approve, however, they were not there!

Sorry, missed comment, not being emailed for some reason. Yes, interesting little place that, appears to have been capped at the that level. Just inside, there is a left branch, but completely calcified up and removing that, would not be subtle.

I can't see any sign of workings in the footage (didn't get to the end myself), but see what you mean. Workings would be small as still shallow at that point but likely coal so feasible.

I know of a few people who have been in and stood in the shaft it'self, but they've not noted anything.

Yes, it's a coal region, intact there are 2x capped shafts very close to this one. Not found any signs of this one at the surface.

Well that probably makes my interpretation wrong, never mind.
