Hello there.

My Sten battery is rather unwell, I'm sure I saw some reference on here about who supplies new, but of course now that I need one, I can't find it!

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. 🙂

Batteries all gone now.

Best option was to use one of the Fenix headlamp 18650 packs with a StenLight connector on them but I've not been able to get hold of the Fenix battery boxes for a while, either...

I'll send an email and see what's available.

I can modify Stenlights to run on one of my 2 cell power banks by fitting an XT 60 connector. I can if required make an adaptor that does not need any modification to the lamp.

Be advised that XT60 is far better than the Tamiya connectors used by Sten and that my batteries are 3500 mAh at nominal 7.4V, which is far superior to the original Sten, was it 2600 mAh?

Modified would of course require one of my chargers which is extra £10

Cost mounts up but still possibly cheaper than a nbew Stenlight pack.

I can vouch for Roy's conversion - mine's seen plenty of action recently (I've been doing a lot of close-up digging work and the Dragon's too bright!) and had no issues at all. The connector is very robust indeed.

I bought some Stenlight stuff late 2018 from here

http://onrope1.com/lights-page-4/

They are in the US, but everything was in stock & arrived quickly. Worth sending an email.

WTF? I thought all parts had gone, worldwide? I may have to order a spare cable or two then just in case the end that Roy can't convert gets trashed! As that will be mine dead again - I don't have any left.

Just for the record.
I have Simon's stock of parts which does not include lamp cables or PCBs. The PCBs are not removable without destruction of them but I can replace LEDs.

I have new bodies and lenses clips and everything. If I had cables and PCBs I could assemble new lamps.

Dragon too bright!
Scorpion X12 has 6 user friendly modes from moonlight up to 3.5K, probably best all round lamp I do.

Hi Roy

Actually PCB removal is a doddle. At least it is on any Sten with a user-swappable cable. All you need to do is:

- Remove the front bezel ring, polycarb screen and gasket.

- Remove rear panel and switch ring, take care with ball bearing and tiny o-ring, disconnect the cable.

- Place the lamp body on a warm radiator for a while to soften the thermal tape that holds the PCB to the body.

- Gently poke the PCB through the cable hole, don't use anything sharp or metal, a wooden chopstick is ideal. Don't apply large force, if it won't budge pop the lamp body back on the warm radiator for a while longer.

When reassembling ensure you remove all traces of thermal tape from the PCB and the lamp body, and replace with a piece of new thermal tape cut to the correct size.

If it's an older (and we're talking 10+ years old now) model with the non-user-swappable cable then the same process applies but you have to chip out the epoxy holding the cable in. It is tricker and poses much more risk of damaging the PCB.

Emitters are all surface mount and you'll see three versions, identifable as:

Big dome shaped Luxeon III - original lamp

Miniature LED chip mounted on carrier board - original lamp that has been upgraded (will also have been upgraded to user-swappable cable)

Miniature LED chip mounted directly on PCB - later Luxeon Rebel lamp (has user-swappable cable and also identifiable by shallower profile body).

You have both lamp body types, PCB carriers and emitters in that parts package IIRC.

Sten were reluctant to provide complete PCBs, even though it would have made repairs and upgrades much easier.

I assumed the USA sites were only selling old stock, but no. I've just had an email from one of the American resellers which said Sten are again manufacturing, albeit in lower quantities.

So Sten parts are most definitely available from the USA.

Batteries may prove problematic to send due to LiIon restrictions

But anybody needing a new cable, or a parts kit etc. should have no trouble ordering (as per Heb's post).

Hey Simon, thanks for this info!

I was unaware that the thermal tape would soften if heat was applied. The stuff I use (Farnell) seems to work the other way round!

Your post is that useful I am saving it in Word and putting it on my system.

Did I not send you the upgrade instruction process Roy? I apologise if not, I certainly meant to. I'm not in the UK at the moment but when I'm back I'll dig it out and send it to you.
