Morning all,

this may seem like an incredibly stupid question with I assume a very simple answer.....

Is there a way to upload images taken in portrait, without them defaulting to a side on position? I'd like to avoid cropping individual images in Photoshop as most of my images are taken in portrait.

Any help is greatly welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Photos taken in portrait seem to upload for me without cropping or other meaningful editing. Could it be a consequence of a setting on your processing software?

I think this is a camera / viewer issue. The camera knows the photo was taken in portrait. Some computer software detects that fact and turns the image accordingly but it's inconsistent so can flip to landscape on different viewing platforms. The answer is to lock it properly in portrait by resaving the image in Photoshop or whatever. No need to crop or edit the image if you don't want to, just open it and save it again.

In fact when I open an iPhone image in some processing software, rotate, "save as...", it sometimes displays it correctly orientated but when uploaded to AN, it reverts to the original image....really annoying. Then I discovered a really simple fix for this problem. I stopped using my iPhone and went back to my Lumix compact. Bingo. Problem solved for me at least. :thumbup:

Willy and Sinker are spot on.

It's the way some devices now save images. Instead of taking them the way around you were holding the phone / camera, they save them horizontal with a bit of data (called EXIF data) that effectively says "display me rotated by x degrees".

Then when uploaded to some sites that cannot read the EXIF data, like AditNow they appear on their side. eBay sometimes falls foul of it too; that's why you occasionally see an upside down car...

Solution - open in something and use Save As to save a copy without the EXIF data. Microsoft Paint strips all the data if you have access to it. Or open in Photoshop or similar, and copy and paste to a new image of the same size.

Bit of a faff I know, but the coding to allow image rotation either before or after upload is too time consuming for me to implement at the moment. Unless there's a mine exploring millionaire out there who wants to pay for it :lol:

Thanks for all the advice guys. I seem to be having this issue with images from a card reader, taken on a bridge camera. I'd been uploading via the same method and camera for years, issue only seems to have started the last year. I've tried using the photo viewer to fully rotate and save but even that makes no difference.

Think I'll try the open in PS and resave option. Have a few hundred images to upload from the last few years so will be looking for something quick and simple.

The orientation is encoded in the file. Copying the file between devices will not remove the information so it will still be the wrong way round when uploaded, sorry.
