I live in tavistock in West Devon and I've been to almost all the surface sites around the area and abit into Cornwall too but I've only been into a couple underground workings and want to explore some more.
My passion for mining genuiney mental I absolutely love it but none of my friends share the same passion so Id love to tag along with someone.
My main question is if I'm going to be accessing underground workings will I need public liability insurance like the caving groups?

And don't worry, I may be a chavy teenager but proper equipment is always used, ppe is a must!!!

Excellent stuff, sounds like you are thinking along the right lines. Insurance is required by the landowners for some sites but not all by any means - although many might say its still beneficial. Hopefully someone local will be along soon - I'm miles away in Cambridgeshire!

You need to have a word with Rick who runs the George and Charlotte (now tourist) mine at Morwellham - BIG mine explorer, mine historian and writer and general good guy. He'll give you some contacts.

http://www.carbisbaycrew.co.uk  they come up your way periodically.

Seems a little harsh - slightly stocky perhaps....

But yes Rick would be a fine fellow to make contact with!

I was talking about big in exploration and knowledge terms!

Hope you're keeping well, how are those METS tokens working on the mine railway or do you still need someone to have a look at them?

If you are new to mine exploring I would strongly recommend you contact the Plymouth Caving Group who are a good bunch of guys and are active in the Tamar Valley. They will give you a really good grounding in the basics.

If that does not appeal drop me a PM (I am in Calstock) and I will see what I can do, although most of the stuff I am doing at the moment is pretty sketchy, usually rope based and not really beginner friendly.

We no longer use the METS machines as we are only running one loco in steam these days.

(For the uninitiated this is choo choo nerd talk. METS = miniature electric train staff , a method of controlling multiple trains on a single line railway)

So this begs the question, what's happening with the METS instruments? (If you're not likely to be running more than 1 train in section - think you'll guess what I'm thinking re a certain railway in the Top Left Corner of Wales...)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
