I am planning a walk from the Tyne to the Aire, stopping off for a mooch around at as many old surface sites as I can. Currently all looking good (OS Maps and Google Earth), but I am wondering is anybody on here has any experience of travelling from Eggles Hope to Hudes Hope. From the maps there is a good path, possibly an old miners track, but I can also see there are several new enclosure fences, and I cant see if there are gates, or am I going to have to take a run and a jump..... not a pretty sight.

My route would see me come into Eggles Hope from the old dam near the Bollihope road, down through Wire Gill. Then up to Manor Gill hushes and over the top to Hudes hope. It is this last bit that I would be grateful for any information on.

Thanks in advance

Have walked up Eggeshope Beck, across to Hudeshope via Manorgill up to Hudeshope Head then across the moor & back down Eggleshope in the snow few years ago.

It was knee deep so can't say anything about the quality or even existence of any tracks but I certainly don't recall crossing many fences.

Lots of open shafts thereabouts. Watch for wriggly tin...

A good right of way path follows the vein across the hill top. You should have no problems in taking this route.

Stick to the footpaths where you can. Raby estate gamekeepers can be a bit touchy!!

Leaving the valley floor at Great Eggleshope, there is a track which climbs the fell toward Lodgesike, following the approximate line of Lodgesike vein, but becoming less well-defined. Keep going up with the hush to your left. There is an open level in one of the hushes up there, which is the back door of Lodgesike High Level workings. We had a prod in there a few years ago, its grim. Toward the summit you pick up the track which leads down to Hudeshope, with Coldberry facing you.

Once you leave Wiregill, theres not much in the way of visible surface remains till you hit Coldberry; Lodgesike has been pretty much obliterated, but its a pleasant yomp nonetheless.

enjoy, but keep an eye on any Hilux double-cabbers!
