The ponds are fenced off (to prevent folks from drowning in them), although the scheme can be seen from the path / lane. Those photos are from an official organised visit.
The scheme at Saltburn; of ponds and reedbeds is a fairly typical setup to remove iron from the water. The current ponds are doing a fairly good job, the phase 2 part will also involve standard natural iron removal methods and will work. It was done in 2 phases for a number of reasons including uncertainties about what the pumped water quality would be (it is different from the 'dry' discharges water quality).
The system at Skinningrove was originally a test which worked during the test, but I think there was an issue about removing/disposing of the ochre/sludge from the tanks. I believe the system isn't currently used, but I haven't been to Skinningrove for a few years.
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos
When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks
