The Holme Valley Local History Society have a new book out covering the coal mining in the 'Holme Valley'
It will be launched tomorrow in New Mill. Priced at £8
It covers mines round the Thurstonland, Fulstone, New Mill, Jackson Bridge up to the Hazlehead, (Hepworth Iron Co).
I have met the writers and it will cover the owners as well as the mines. Round this area several of the mine owners got together to form 'Hepworth Iron Company' the well know pipe manufacturers.
As I will be away for the launch I can say no more at the moment or where they will be available.
Any body interested I will look into it for them.

Thanks for the heads up ....I'll ask the Mrs to have a looksy for it on her local travels .

As an aside We had a wander up on the moors with the hounds weekend before last over Todmorden/Walsden way .

Found some workings on the tops (Foulclough/Inchfield colliery ) Not a lot to see Coal workings wise BUT plenty of evidence of clay pipe production (Fire clay ???)

I'm sure I've read in their family history somewhere that they had links to a mine at Upper Denby on "Coal pit lane" ???

Hi
There is a book out called 'Riches of the Earth' which covers the survey of Todmorden Moor, Baildon Moor and I think Shipley Moor and shows the mine workings etc.
I picked it up from 'West Yorkshire Geology Trust'. I have contacts if you want one

Hi Rikj
How do you know it is available from the tourist information office? When I spoke to the writers they were unsure if they would be printed in time for todays launch. Only launch I will see today if I am lucky is the Bridlington Lifeboat.

Hi Rik

That is the one. Write up is not true but it should be interesting. I have been corresponding with Alan for a couple of years. He worked at HIC and obtained some maps from them of their old workings. Must email him to find out what else he has.
