As a pre-event to AV Festival 14, Spanish artist Lara Almarcegui invites members of the public to see the last coal excavation on Science Central in Newcastle. These guided tours are the first project to take place as part of AV Festival 14, which takes the theme of Extraction, and runs from 1 – 31 March 2014.

During the process of redevelopment on Science Central, one of the UK’s largest development projects, significant coal seams were discovered and throughout 2013, coal was extracted from the site. The tour will focus on the geology of the site, and will show the different layers of earth and rock that have been removed.

Lara Almarcegui (1972, Spain) represented Spain at the Venice Biennial in 2013. Other projects include Guide to ruined Buildings in the Netherlands XIX-XXI Century (2008), and solo exhibitions at Secession, Vienna (2010) Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2012) and CAAC, Seville (2012).

This project is organised by AV Festival in partnership with Science Central and Halls Construction. For further information see www.avfestival.co.uk or www.newcastlesciencecentral.com
