Has anyone visited this site or have any info on it please. There is no listing for it here on AN but it is listed but without details over on ME. It's location is on the edge of Melbecks to the NNE of Gunnerside at SD 956992 and the workings are clearly visible on Google Earth. Any info on this will be gratefully received.

Hi,
I my memory serves me correctly Peter Crabtree of I discovered the Sir Francis Engine fame wrote up a small article for the PDMHS journal probably around the late 60's.
Not visited the site myself but might be something in the article.

Your memory is right, he wrote a series of articles for volume 3 on the Kidson mines of Swaledale. Unfortunately, they've not yet been scanned and put online!

Dunham gives it a passing mention.

The dumps (of Barbara Level) give the impression that neither this vein, not its SSE branch known as Kining Vein, entered from Kining Level above Gunnerside village, were very well mineralised.

I think some of the Swaledale locals have a dig on in there.
Unfortunately they are not an 'online' group so getting in touch with them is difficult.

I've added it to the database.

More info in Mike Gills 'Swaledale its Mines and Smelt Mills"

Started by Messrs Jacques in the early 1840s and followed Kinning Vein north-west in the main limestone to its junction with Barbara Vein, which was reached in 1855. The level had its own dressing floor, but was never a large producer of ore and only six men worked there in November 1862.

From what I've heard Kining Level is gated and a local has key. Not sure if this is true or not but was told this by Reeth Museum's curator.

I don't imagine anyone but me saw

If anyone is absolutely desperate to get in touch about it I have a friend who has known the person in question for a long time.

Judging by the size of the site it seems a lot of work went on for little return. The lack of info and/or photos I suppose is due to its location a bit off the beaten track where it would attract little 'passing trade 'as it were. Thanks to all who replied with what little info is available.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
