The Coal Authority entry for this shaft on their interactive map viewer is interesting:

"This entry has been filled and capped to former NCB specification" :(

I suspect this wasn't the modern specification with dams/stoppings at pit bottom and filling with pea gravel etc ........ I wonder if the general rebound in the Northumberland Coalfield is having an impact on loose tipped fill in shafts?

Shaft filling for dummies.

Throw trees down the shaft till it blocks.
Fill shaft with spoil and waste to near the top.
Cover with planks.
Add a layer of top soil.

Jobs a good un!

A much better job would be to cover it over with timber, leave to grass over, and then forget its there.

Boy, am I glad sometimes to live where there is nothing beneath me of any value, past or present. Apart from a massive load of oil/gas. Possibly. Anybody got any cheap fracking kit I can buy?

Well I live over an old brickworks, I found this out when I had my bungalow extended.

Of course, Great Wyrley does have some coal mining history.

Dig down to the rock head use a CA. designed reinforced concrete raft, and cover. If wanting to build over, bring up in crushed stone compacted at 225mm depth intervals, raft over for house foundations.

It even made it to the Metro this morning. I only picked my copy up on the way home from eating out a short time ago.

"'It's the main pit shaft' a resident said". Well, full marks to him or her. The general public is not usually as astute. Maybe an ex-miner?

I have to wonder about the trapped car, and who is liable for hiring one for the owner until it can be safely retrieved. The average fully comp policy doesn't mention cars trapped out of use but otherwise undamaged.

If it's a coal shaft, the CA should sort something out for the owner. Can't be the first time.
