Anyone got any figures for any of the large mines worked by pillar and stall extraction? Boulby must have a fair old length of passage....

I imagine a big iron/stone/coal/etc mine worked bord & pillar could hammer that (so longs as the pillars were left obviously).

The amount of sheer determination to achieve the true 3 Counties system defies belief.

Exploration has been going on with this aim in mind for at least 30 years, and finally achieving it is a real milestone.

Fantastic news.

After the 3 kids were rescued from facit mine, the CEO reckoned on about 120 km of passages, this being a sandstone mine being worked by pillar and stall could be right!

Well, Box is 50Km I think, and Box is tiny compared to the Ironstone stuff in Cleveland that I enjoyed a quick poke around yesterday (Thanks Chris & Rich).

There must be many hundreds of miles up there.

I think they've run out of counties, Edd.

Seriously though, getting under Chapel le Dale is a helluva challange, and it peters out then. Might be possible to get to White Scar and some of the Ingleborough stuff. Doubt it's possible to get to The Allotment though.

Love to be proved wrong however.....

RJV, the big iron mine you are thinking of had 176 miles of roadway.

Big it was but it wasn't the one I was thinking of. If I can summon some energy from somewhere later on I might do some very rough maths as I reckon that might just be beatable! 🙂

I much prefer the write up in the Telegraph which suggests the system goes under the A66 and M62 - this would suggest a trip into Smeltmill Beck cave (under the A66) after a breakfast in the transport cafe could take significantly longer than we previously thought.
Watch for a decent write up in the Guardian gentlemen, they have a journalist who knows what he's talking about and has been involved in underground exploration for a very long time.

I can throw a number your way richard, a certain ironstone mine with an underground blacksmiths shop has easily 150 miles of board and pillar workings but given how close together the passages were driven its probably nearer to 200 miles.

Though its size doesnt matter when the air quality only lets you see 3 or so miles of it.

Would that be a certain Mr Rose, of Xitu fame?

I can think of several Ironstone mines with easily 100km in them...not as big as the 276km that Les mentioned though!!
All I want for Christmas is an Eimco...
