The Welsh Mines Preservation Trust is honoured to be considered for a donation from the sale of the Adit Now calendar for 2012.
I note from some postings on this thread that the repair of the pump-rods at Cwm Ciprwth is a project that many feel would be a use for this donation.
I feel it only fair to raise a few points about this suggestion:-
1 The Trust’s regular work party members either live or have an interest in the Mid Wales area and I think we would find it difficult to attract sufficient numbers up to North Wales. If however Adit Now members in the area were able to assist this would not be a problem.
2 We need to find out if the site is a Scheduled Monument, if it is we would have to obtain Scheduled Monument Consent from CADW and have the work plan and materials approved by CADW.
We also need to find out who owns the site and who carried out the last repair; and to get their permission to do the work.
3 I have not been to Cwm Ciprwth for many years and I am not aware how bad the condition of the pump-rods is; I assume they need complete replacement. To replace them would be quite an involved job, we would need to strip everything down, remove the iron fittings for cleaning and painting, dispose of the rotten timber. We would then need to source suitable timber either pitch pine or hard wood, drill holes and apply paint or preservative and transport them to the site. Then refit the whole assembly.
Further to this we would need a plan for ongoing maintenance.
4 I do not have a clue how much all of this would cost. The Trust does not have much spare money, I would think it would cost much more than Adit Now would be able to fund to complete the work.
Obviously costs could be reduced if someone was able to find a cheap source of timber and arrange/provide transport. Sources of additional funding may be found.
I feel it only fair to make you all aware of the situation before you decide to make a
donation from sale of Adit Now calendars to the Trust, as I can not at present
guarantee that the Trust would be able to spend the donation on restoration at Cwm
Ciprwth. If forum members still decide to make a donation to the Trust and repairs at
Cwm Ciprwth were not possible, I am sure a suitable site in Mid Wales could be
found for the donation to be spent at eg. Dylife or any other site decided by Forum
members.
