I just found this by chance , it might have been on here before but for those who haven't seen it , it is a fascinating yet very sad record of every detail of each and every miner killed in England's worst ever mining disaster
The publishers say it can not be copied for commercial use and is only for public and private use , so I guess its OK

Makes for predictably sad and rather grim reading. Especially the entries like the young lad that has his head blown off, chest burst open and disembowelled. How horrible for his mum to have to identify a corpse like that :(

Despite the horrific violence of the explosion, it shows that the cause of death for the great majority of the victims was CO poisoning rather than injury. Shows how important self-rescuers are, though they didn't come into service for decades after Pretoria. Mind you, the SR doesn't give you long, especially the chemical scrubber ones. Perhaps enough to get to a refuse station though, if your pit has them...

And little bits of social history noted....the description of one of the unknown victims mentioned that his clogs were holed and repaired and had insoles made from Quaker Oats boxes.... fourteen years old FFS. 😞

There was a book called dark days brought out in the 70s and it was interviews with old colliers from all over lancs. There was quite a lot on pretoria in that inc some from families of the victims. If you can get hold of it its a fascinating book.
