I've been going through old photos today. Thought these were rather good - we were given them by an old boy in Alderley many years ago, and photos show a group of explorers in the 1950's, in the Hough Level, with a boat they'd found down there. How exploring USED to be done!

I've also uploaded some photos of the Stump Shaft dig into Wood mine - featuring Steve Mills and Nigel Dibben.. about 1980 from memory

No worries - pm me an email addie - I've a lot more taken of Steve and Nige in Stump shaft too - I thought that Steve had a set of these pics - I got several sets done at the time. It was an old boy - one of the ones in the photo - who used to come into the pub where we went after digging. Now from memory, it was on wednesday evenings, and there was a bowling lawn at the side of the pub - cant remember which one - but I remember some of the lads playing music too. I think the landlord used to put newspaper on the floor so we could go in digging clothes!!

I don't know where he lived, but he wrote several books on the metal mines of Wales. I have a photo of the same man at Levant and judging by appearance I would think your photo is closer to 1935, unless he aged very slowly, as some people do

Hi Mr Spitfire

The gent with the glasses is not David Bick, I knew David personally, he died a few years ago and was the founder and president of Welsh Mines Society.

Kindest regards
RF

EDIT
Sorry, he lived in Newent, Glos. Its inside the front cover of his books, he published them himself as "The Pound House".
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Hard one. The guy who was in the photo was a local resident in Alderley - they were a group of friends who lived there most of their lives, and gave me the photos to copy when we met them in the pub one night. Have a look at the other photos - hang on...

This is another of the photos - he might be a bit clearer in this one. All I can say is that he said it was the 1950's - but you may be right... 🙂
