This item was brought into our museum recently, unfortunately the man who donated it left little information about it and I was wondering if any of you could give me some insight as to its possible origins.

Many thanks

Hi,
It is obviously an exploder. It appears as though the carrying handle unclips and then doubles as the firing handle in the round hole.
This would tend to rule out mining use as it would be seriously illegal to have a handle that was so easily available on a relatively modern exploder.
I think the olive drab green paint gives the biggest clue as to where it comes from.
It is probably ex-military. Check around for the WD arrow mark on it?

I remember seeing an identical one at Macsalvors in Pool in the late 70s. Definitely ex-WD, the handle fits into the hole and then pulls the 'rack' out, this is then pushed down (in true cartoon fashion) to fire. I seem to recall that the case was some sort of light alloy.

Yes, it's military, Uk official designation "Exploder, Dynamo, Mark 7" suitable for firing upto 40 detonators.
