moston pit in manchesters spoil heap caught fire if i remember right they sprayed water on it and sank pipes in and injected water in it....they put it out eventually and then built houses on top, as a kid i could still see the red tip at the side of moston brook with houses backing onto it all grassed over now.

if its a hole explore it...

I used to work in that area Moston Miners estate Moston Mill estate (opposite) and Moston Brook high school (now gone)
The Miners estate had a tower block and two big blocks of maisonettes which were still coal fired via one big boiler in the tower block up to about 1980 ?
The heating ducts were full of millions of cockroaches that layed their eggs around the heating pipes
The boiler took 10 tons of coal a week and the caretaker was a huge jock ex Agecroft miner called Peter 😉

Going back about five years plus I used to work for a firm who had an office in Manchester so I'd invariably find myself stuck in some dull city-centre hotel for a few weeks a year. One summer evening I headed out without map or magic phone to try and find the Ardwick limestone mine after reading a reference to it on a book on Moston Colliery.

Not really knowing much about Manchester at the time (other than how to get phenomenally drunk at the cricket :-[) I managed only to get dismally lost!

Is there anything left there to see do you know? It doesn't appear to be in the database. :offtopic:

It seems that flicker site is Pitheadgear's site
on looking at the map of the shafts I went on to google earth to see if anything remained , in the corner of the screen was street view when I clicked on it , I was shocked to see the entrance to Mercedes Benz Retail ,on Viaduct street ,somewhere I have contracted for , for over ten years;D

There is still a fair bit of open ground around that area , so I might have a mooch

Looks like at least one of the shafts is built over, presumably the limestone outcrops to the north east?
