Dad has dragged me to severla slate mines in Lakeland
Word of info 'hope ids useful'.
As far as I know there are no large slate mines in Lakeland, besides Honister, which is a good laak around. when I say large - I mean it in the sense that there are no large interconnecting systems of chambers, but some of the valleys Langdale) are full of small levels, many of which still have equipment inside. Whats more interesting about them is thet Welsh slate mines typically used cranes to lift the slabs, were as in Cumbria underground ropeways or 'Clog-Lifts' were often used.

I reccomend taking a look. There is all sorts.
Slate, Limestone, Ironstone, Coal, Copper, Iron, Gold (small, silver (small), lead, zinc & more unusual things like Wolfrom. Tours?
There is one oa Threlkeld quarry, but its a re-constructed lead mine. Honister tour is great, but there is little in the way of total exploration. There are some enormous mines like Greenside, and Coniston, and Honister. Most of the slate mines are safe to explore, but sany of the metal mines can be a little dodgy. Big limestone mine somewhere in yourshire; easy to get lost in according to relitives.

If you want a real look, I reccomend asking CATMHS or Ian Taylor's gang. They seemed to have archived most of the mines.

About the limestone mine:
Well - Ive no idea, but I know a few folks who might have an idea. I was actually told my Ma dad y grandad, who mentioned it being near 'Hawes north of Kirkby longsdale (spelling).
I wil ask my grandad on the phone & get back. 😉

p.s. - Weather depending me + dad + others might be taking a look at Old Man quarries on weekend. Last time I went my dad took some rubbish photos & I took a video camera, the quality of which is so bad it can only be seen in detail on a small screen, but it captures 1.6 hours of the noises of dripping water and the sound of slate slabs being stepped on.
I can send it by post if anyone is sad enogh to want to watch it!

Never heard of that one, but i know someone who might!
I've been past a few coal mines in this area, althoug all that remains of most of them is a capped shaft and some tips, perhaps an old incline.

Nimrod your ifomation.
the mine is in fact a flag mine with a grid referance of SD986887.
T least my family think its here.
It was quarried as well as mined, but the mine section is huge!
don't go yet, I need to confirm.
p.s. have you ever met David Kay, he is my grandad, and seems to recognise your real name.
He was the one who dug out Buckden Gavel, and found a dead body inside.
