CMHS on Tour visited Carricks Mine in Weardale on Saturday and the grid ref. should be NY 861380 instead of as given. This is the middle of a farm which occupies the site of the level but surface still interesting.
Visitors must note that the well made road up to the farm from the T junction is private although a public footpath. We made the mistake of parking in this road and nearly caused a major incident through local over-reaction. This is understandable because of so much theft and poaching in the country, but the matter was resolved amicably on both sides which is the important thing.

Oh dear, should really turn up for some of these trips. Especially ones near the shop that sells good icecream in Stanhope...

Just going out, will amend it later if not beaten to it!

Little bit more info on Carricks. In the late 60's met the farmer who told me that during the war the MOS had difficulty keeping the mine ventilated!
They used to fill an ore waggon with fuel light it then send it into the mine!
Presumably this drove convection currents to start the mines ventilation!
He proudly told me that when the MOS had finished with Craig's level, he personally made sure it was well blocked!

This time its partly my fault. Bobgins Pit should be NZ 203561 not as shown. I took the grid ref. from another website instead of relying on my 25,000 OS map.

Fixed it for you Simon. Went to the Causey Arch a couple of years ago but was completely oblivious to that nearby site.

Thanks Chris.

The site is overgrown but Scheduled so I have not told our local site clearance enthusiast about it!

Is the name a somewhat clunky description of what it is or does it have some other significance?

Bobgins is quite descriptive as in the eighteenth century it was a name applied to a beam engine driving pumps in a shaft but driven by waterwheel. Several genuine bob gins existed in the vicinity but this shaft was probably sunk later and deeper and had a steam driven beam engine working it although the name became applied to it. May have been a Newcomen engine but needs detailed research.

The connection is in the above title which relates to altering the grid references of sites.

Reading through you will notice that the second site requiring the above is in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area.

Hi John

The thread was started by Simon primarily to draw attention to an incorrect grid reference. The detail about Carrick itself was added colour. The same thread was therefore used for Bobgins which apparently was also not where it ought to be.

Thanks Richard NGRs are often suspect!
In the early days of GPS it took a lot of faith to simply realise the unit was correctlly, giving you the actual Grid Ref.
These doubts arose because you had become used to these inaccuracies, and consequently descrepanicies were to be expected!

"There's no such thing as bad grid references, just bad map readers."

As somebody famous may or may not have said... 🙂
