In 1982(?) there was subsidence in Rutherglen Road affecting several houses. There was a meeting called by the Council(I believe) held in St Paul's School (as it then was) within a week or so of the event.

I attended the meeting and among other contributors there was an expert on the Chalk Workings in Plumstead, the Chislehurst and Blackheath Caves. He was French and was known as a Count.

I understand when the Blackheath Hill collapse happened some years ago there was some effort to consult him and I do not know whether these efforts were succesful. LBG have so far not been able to help.

Does anyone know who this person is and where he could be contacted?

Others may be more qualified than me to comment, but my understanding, if this person is who I think it might be, is considered by many reputable local mine historians to be a 'dubious source of reliable information'. AdrianP may have less-speculative information on the French Count. I'll say no more.

French Count? "Un, deux, trois ....."

Maybe it was a spelling error - a superfluous "o" 😉
