When it comes to mine fires China and India take some beating. In 2004, China ended a mine fire at Liuhuanggou colliery, near Urumqi in Xinjiang province. It had been burning since 1874!
Pennsylvania state has the most mine fires; I believe there is another one on the go at Vanderbilt.

Edit.
Just to add China's coal fires burn 20 – 30 million tons of coal a year!!!
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

There was one years ago near where I live at Great Wyrley, Grove Colliery now disused.
When I was a kid we used to climb the tips to where a fissure issued smoke and fumes. I can remember seeing some kind of crystallisation inside, but did not feel any inclination to put my hand in to investigate!
Anyone have any idea what this could have been.

My avatar is a poor likeness.

If it was coming up through a shale tip gypsum is a likely one.
Same stuff that forms most of the efflorescent coatings on the shale in the Nenthead mines.

Interesting stuff. I've pondered series of rock with pyrite and oil.... a "while" ago, Burning Cliff was named near Ringstead Bay, Weymouthish after decomposing pyrite ignited oil... I find it rather hard to believe myself, but it's theoretically possible.

Some numbskull had a similar idea to use deep mines up north as a source of producer gas (CO and H2) by setting fire to the seam. The Chinese coal fires contribute about 3% of the world's total CO2 output. Good job the green stuff is busy converting it back.....

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
