Hi there,

re this trip, were are we meeting/parking as it looks like there will be quite a few people. Could someone post a grid reference for a good spot to park?

Just wondering about footwear for the trip on the 28th. Will climbing boots be OK or is it a wellies job ?

It's a bit soggy beyond the bottom of he airshaft but after that it's very dry. Walking boots will be fine

Hopefully we'll have Davel with us and will rig the pitch with an electron ladder... if your walking boots have got sticking out lace hooks I'd say wear wellies instead :lol: Getting your feet tangled in an electron ladder isn't a whole lot of fun :lol:

Hopefully I will be with you and I'll try to remember to bring some gaffa tape with me to obviate the hook/ladder interface problem.

Hello, I spent a lot of my youth in a cottage in Glyndyfrdwy and my family would often visit the quarry. I've been back several times in recent years but I never knew it was visited by others.

Have people on this forum got an interest in mining or do you have relatives that worked there.

Also whats happening on 28th?

Hi John C, welcome to the asylum (sorry, website)!

Some of us are in this out of interest in mining, some from an interest in industrial history (my reason), some from local history, a desire to record what has been, before it all goes, some from caving, relatives - the reasons are so diverse it would probably take a week to list them all.
On the 28th, a few (11 I think) are off up to Moel Fferna for a bit of a look round. I've never been before, so really looking forward to it (that and SWMBO is glad to get me from under her feet for the day).

My interest in Moel Fferna was sparked off when visiting Ty Newydd farm at Carrog which is on the other side of the river. I could see the tips on the hill and asked the farmer for information about it. Then I got a bit nearer by delivering annimal feed with a 13 tonner to Cwm Isaf which is on the tarmac road leading to Moel Fferna. The farmer would tell me some of the history of the mine and how to get there also said that his father and other relatives once worked there. He said he had an old photo of his father at the quarry, he did not show it to me though.
There was a booklet published by the women's institute with pictures of Glyndyfrdwy and some of the mine. It was sold at the post office/shop at Glyndyfrdwy.
But that was between 1993-'95.
