There was an interesting progreme on BBC2 Wales the other evening called 'Time may change me- To wipe the slate clean.
It shows Llechwedd and the Oakeley/Gloddfa Ganol in 1974 and as it is now. Available on I player. Sorry I do not know how to do the link.

The download button downloads the high quality version to your hard drive. However, there is a catch. It allows you to keep it and play it for up to 30 days but once you have played it you can only keep it for 7 days from that time. If you leave it until say 28 days (unlikely I know) before you watch it you only get 2 days.

If anyone has recorded it off the telly onto a dvd, let me know as I would appreciate a copy.
I thought it was a really amazing programe as it showed how much the quarries have changed over the years. Interesting to see how much Oakeley have come into the underground tour section since closure in 1997.
there ware a lot of people on that programe I used to know, but are not with us anymore. The man splitting the slate block at the 'bone' with wedges at Llechwedd was John Griffiths. His mother was the teacher at the school at Rhiwbach slate mine.

I can only say, if anyone has managed a recording "Me too" please! Amazing to see a young Wil Roberts, just before I met him! Fascinating scenes that bring back many memories for me.

I would really apprciate a DVD recording of it too if anyone has recorded it please.

Happy to refund expenses, disc, posting etc.

Can't access on iPlayer as it is blocked in work.

Is it still on the iplayer?
If so download the HighQuality one and use fairuser4wm to remove the obnoxious drm from the file.

This can then be burnt to DVD


You used to be able to ask for the iphone version in h264 not sure if that bug has been closed yet though.

hmm well its not available for the iphone at the moment but

Does that mean you can then play it on a domestic DVD player on TV or is the format wrong?

The file can't be directly burnt to a DVD for playing in a standalone DVD player, it will need to be converted to PAL MPEG2 first. Doing that is nice and easy, removing the DRM protection is the tricky bit. As far as I know fairuser4wm will not work with the more modern versions of Windows Media Player, (which I have), so I'm looking for another solution. Once I've got a DVD sorted I'll let you know and post you one 😉

The "escape to the country" (BBC) crew where up @ llechwedd recording a program yesterday aswel! I was the one who got the short straw to Explain (in my best English, which was a bit of a feat!) how we extracted slate from the rock face and turn it in to the finished product! Should be aired sometime Feb/March

A fascinating time capsule - particularly interesting to see Gloddfa Ganol captured at that stage of its development (a few years before I first visited it). Including the Snow White and the Seven Dwarves cavern before the general public started the sport of throwing rocks at the figures...

Ok I have fired up my old VM and got a DRM free version of the file I haven't converted it to something that would go on a DVD yet. I might get round to this at some point.

Well done - I was going to do this tonight, so you beat me to it, (everything I tried last night failed misserably). If I fire up my FTP at the weekend, would you put it on there, then I could make DVDs for anyone who wanted it? Cheers

Look forward to seing your performance on the telly. To think that hundereds of people have queued for hours to try and get on 'X factor' and you get to be a star of a programe no problem.
Let us know a few days before the programe goes on the telly so that I can record it.
