Its a black sphere about 3/4 inch surounded by a sulphurous deposit found in a slate mine.
Any ideas as to what it might be or what might have caused it.

Oxidising pyrite perhaps?

there is a fair bit accross the tiped slate in the chamber this was the only piece this big but there was plenty of yellow sulphurous rings varying in size.

Probably is pyrite (iron sulphide) then.
It usually has a more brown look to it once it starts to decompose but it can go black or even irridescent.
