We're aiming for 21st September! But there may be a bit of grace beyond that if anyone needs it... 🙂

Can you still put your name down for one of these calendars or am I out of time?

Out of time, heck no, there'll be plenty of them to go around. They won't even go to print until the first week in October at which time they'll go on sale via the web site. Worry not!

Here's the 2009 calendar. Barring any mistakes / omissions it's off to print tomorrow.

A few things to mention first...

As discussed it's a mine per month rather than a person per month. Sometimes there's a mix of photographers on the same page, sometimes the same photographer has all three photos on the page. In all cases the main image is credited, and it's a different person each month.

Like last year we had more submissions that months. This means a few people will be disappointed. Very sorry about his and hope if you are then you can be included next year. Final selections were made on a mixture of photograph quality and historical relevance. We tried (with one or two exceptions due to the very high standard of submitted photographs) not to feature locations this year that were on last year's calendar.

Last year's calendar had one Cornish mine featured, sadly this year's calendar doesn't - no submissions from people in the SW.

And finally a grateful thank you to Vanoord for stepping in and taking over the collation of submissions and mine descriptions. And for cutting through all the unpleasantness and politicing that regrettably nearly spoilt this year's calendar. Without Vanoord taking this on it wouldn't have happened.

(Oh and these screen grabs are RGB images from a press-ready CMYK document, hence the blacks look a little washed out and green tinted, on the print everything will be more vibrant and blacks will be black!)

Sorted :)

Quick question for anybody who can comment, the description for Brewery Shaft I was given read:

Brewery Shaft is a 3.6m diameter concrete lined shaft which descends 100m to the Nent Force Level and Rampgill Deep Level, orignally used for access to the former and for driving the latter. It was later used for generating compressed air using Pelton wheel generators, producing 8KW at 230v. This was also used to power the company offices in Nenthead.

That should read "used for generating electricity" right? Does the compressed air reference relate to a something else or is it a total abberation?!

It was used for generating electricity using Pelton wheel generators and also producing compressed air, the air was drawn down the pipes in the shaft by the water flow & separated out at the bottom, the vertical column of water providing the required pressure to the air for use in the mine.

A little bit more detail if you need it 🙂

"Initially the air was supplied by a steam powered compressor plant but between 1803 and 1915 the steam plant was gradually replaced by a system of hydraulic compressors using water from three local reservoirs, Smallcleugh Dam, Perry's Dam and Coalcleugh Dam. One set of compressors was located in a chamber excavated at the base of Brewery Shaft. Water from Smallcleugh Dam was carried in a 12" iron pipe (much of which is still visible on the moor) to the top of a 90 foot tower above the shaft. At the top of the shaft, air was admitted into the feed pipe and was sucked down by the descending water. At the bottom of the shaft the air was collected in a bell shaped air receiver. The escaping water was led up a pipe to the Rampgill Horse Level 260 feet above and compressed the air in the receiver. This water was then directed back down the shaft by a third pipe to turn the 80 and 140 horsepower Pelton Wheels in the engine chambers.

These wheels drove air compressors and an electric generator. The outflowing water was discharged along the Nentforce Level. The compressed air was used for driving drilling and winching machinery, pumping and ventilation. It was carried underground in a complex network of iron pipes. Surplus electricity from the generators was fed to Nenthead Village, the first community in the area to receive an electrical supply."

Cheers,

Jim

Thanks Jimbo :flowers:

Vanoord can you re-write the description on the calendar to cover that - at the moment it's tweaked just to mention generating electricity.

Is everybody else happy with their months? Bit last minute, but hopefully it'll go off to proof tomorrow.

I know its a little out of the normal format but is it possible to add "Mole" to Eric Burke on August?
Purely as most people would have known him by that name.

Si - I'll merrily re-write it, but you'll have to halve the size of the text for that month so you can fit twice as many words in! 😮 Possibly just add "compressed air and" in front of electricity?

The calendar proof arrived back from the printer today. They've done a great job with it again (perhaps if the people who fouled up the merchandise 1st time around are reading this... :)) I shall order the print run on Monday and it'll go on sale from beginning of November 🙂
