Kerrier council laid on an event this evening, monday the 30th, that was an attempt to simulate, just a little, times of yon. It was very well attended which is good. The idea was to let off smoke containers in about thirty stacks from Troon, down the valley across West Basset and South Francis and then through the valley taking in Wheal Basset down to Wheal Uny. This photo is looking across the valley with Lyle's shaft bottom left. background the two calciner stacks of West Wheal Basset with the stamps poking up in the center.

Many thanks for sharing that moment. I was unable to attend due to illness - frigging hospitals, it's almost a year now and still waiting for my op... so much for Government waiting lists coming down.....

Look forward to more pictures if anyone got round to taking any. Thanks agian Carnkie, for the above photo, it looks really good. Sorry to have missed this wonderful opportunity. TM

Thanks for the picture. I agree with TM - looks great.

Potential for an annual event? Would love to have seen it.

I recall hearing about a lime kiln that was fired up during a heritage / history event. Local residents were furious because their laundry was outside drying & got covered in black marks.

Serves 'em right, I say. Trying to get into the spirit of things by drying their washing by traditional methods is taking things just a step too far ..

I think it's very possible that it may become an annual event. The interest shown was far greater than I expected. Of course you can't be in three places at the same time but the area around King Edward was packed and Carn Brea was overflowing. Where I was, Basset Carn, was also well populated and the good thing was there were many families with kids. The boy standing near me me kept asking his father questions like, "what's a calciner" and then of course, "what's arsenic". Can only be a good thing.

That's the beauty of living in a China Clay area Colonel. Your washing is always white ๐Ÿ™‚

Especially this council. I'll ignore the last suggestion. ๐Ÿ™‚
