Is Dr Who paying a flying visit? If not what is it?

probably there for the national trust, interesting contrast between that and the building behind.

Sorry, but what do the national trust actually plan to do to this place; keep it locked and to themselvs? (The mine building)

That's echoes my thinking. As a matter of interest what was the building?

Force Crag baraytes mine, near Keswick.Processing mill
Its pretty much restored to the day of closure back in 1984(?)
They have periodic opens days throughout the year, the intention is to preserve it as is permanently, I've been in and they have done a really nice job on it. Its not a Disney type restoration, the National Trust went to great lengths to recover equipment that had been liberated between closure and them getting hold of the place.
Its worth looking up when they have an open day and going for a look, not normally much in favour of guided tours but at least it ensures its long term preservation just as it was the day it closed (or as close as makes no difference)

More info & some other links to the Nationl Trust & English Heritage sites here http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/forcecragmine.htm

I visited the mine in 1987 when it was still worked on an intermittent basis & you could drive up to the site when the guys were there for a chat. The mill was in a worse condition then, good to see it preserved unlike the relatively modern mill at Carrock that also existed untouched at that time & was later demolished & the site landscaped (wish I had taken more photos back then) 😞

The Trust seem pretty good at maintaining stuff as is, or as was last used - & letting folk see it! In Cheshire & the Peak they don't seem overly averse to exploration or even digging of stuff on their land, it may take time & some form filling but if you ask & satisfy them you're responsible, insured etc...
Given the current climate, one of the better big landowners.

It a bog for walkers... part of the new directive from Mine Explorers United. They are to be placed outside every mine so walkers have no need to use portals as toilets anymore when they get a call of nature.

Seems a sensible idea and being colour coded negates the necessity for sign posts.

There is nothing worse than using one of those portable toilets especially when it has been used by about 100 people before you.
Personally I prefer to pee against a rock or a wall, but being very carefull that I don't face into the wind.

Even worse in the middle of winter when its contents are all frozen, but enough of that, eh ? 😮

Worse, worse, still using one late at night at Dorset Steam Fair only to have an entire row of them, with users, tipped over by drunken persons. I pity the people who were inside, especially as they were always emptied first thing in the morning, by evening they must have been well ripe!

At least they're better than the construction I saw on entering a festival in Lancashire many years ago. This was a scaffolding affair with plastic sheeting which was built on the hillside above the approach road. Probably not too bad under quiet conditions but it was a windy day and there were frequent views of rows of bums while we queued to get into the site.
